How Much Sod Is on a Pallet? Pallets Needed by Lawn Size

A pallet of sod usually covers 400 to 500 sq ft, and 450 sq ft is the most common size. That's about 168 slabs of 16 × 24 inches or 45 rolls of 2 × 5 ft. A 1,000 sq ft lawn needs 3 pallets with a little extra. Enter your lawn in the sod calculator for an exact count.

Pieces per pallet

The grass type, the farm's cutting machine and how thick the soil layer is all change the pallet size, so ask your supplier. These are typical numbers.

How much does a pallet of sod weigh?

Fresh sod weighs around 2,000 to 3,000 lb per pallet, and more when wet. That's too heavy for most pickup trucks, so most people pay for delivery. Make sure the truck can reach the spot without crossing a septic field or soft ground.

Ordering tips

  • Add 5% for a rectangle, 10 to 15% for curves around beds and trees.
  • Schedule delivery for the day you lay it. Stacked sod heats up and starts to die within a day in warm weather.
  • Prep before delivery: remove old grass, loosen the soil and rake in fresh topsoil so the sod roots quickly. The topsoil calculator gives the yards to order.
  • Water the same day until the soil under the sod is soaked, then keep it moist for two weeks.
